oldhamelOldham County; with it’s festivals, A+ schools, and room to roam no wonder many are choosing to live here.Named for Colonel William Oldham in 1823, it started as a small rural community.  By time the 1850s came along the Frankfort Railroad Company had built many rail lines which in turn sprouted many other small towns and communities.  Oldham county is now home to over 60,000 residents. Many contribute their move to Oldham County strictly based on the many schools it has to offer.  It operates 17 schools in addition to an alternative school, career center, and it’s arts center.  This adds up to almost 12,000 students.  So what’s the big deal about Oldham County schools?  It might be their student to teacher ratio, which is 16:1.  Or maybe it’s their graduation rate, 85.6%, whereas the state currently ranks at 77.8%.  Or maybe it’s all of their achievements.Oldham County boasts four Schools of Distinction, four Highest Performing Schools, nine Distinguished Schools, and is a three-time winner of the Advanced Placement Honor Roll.  It should be noted that they are the only county in Kentucky to hold that honor.  plackard
Aside from the schools, there’s plenty to see and do in Oldham County.  For those that love the outdoors there is the Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve, Yew Dell Gardens, Falling Rock Park, and Morgan Conservation Park to name a few.Golfing enthusiasts can take a swing at one of their many golf courses.  Head over to Crestwood to get in some practice at the  Golden Tee Golf Range, and then head to the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Prospect or the Eagle Creek Golf Course in LaGrange.  You can also squeeze in some target practice at Open Range Sports in Crestwood, or work on that dive at the Aquatic Center, located in Buckner.Stop on by for Oldham County Days towards the end of July.  You’ll enjoy line dancing, a 5K race, the parade, cupcake eating contest, concerts, and what celebration wouldn’t be complete without a pancake breakfast!Make sue you don’t miss out on the LaGrange Railroad and Bluegrass Festival celebrated each year in October.  It’s one weekend packed with plenty of music, train rides, corn-hole tournaments, and food. Some interesting facts about Oldham County:unk-23
  • Oldham County for the majority of it’s life has been a “dry” county.  This was until at 2005 when it was voted to become a “moist” county.  For those of you not familiar with this terminology.  In Kentucky we still have many counties that ban the sale alcohol, making them a “dry” county.  Those with a “moist” status allow restaurants that make at least 70% of their sales from food, and are able to seat at least 100 patrons, to also serve alcohol.
  • Oldham County is the wealthiest county in the state of Kentucky with a median household income of over $70,000.  This might have something to do with the fact that Oldham County holds the second largest amount of college educated individuals in the state. Pretty impressive!
